right now its just an application. The confirmation email says they'll contact you if they need more documents or something

We'll contact you if we need additional information

We may need additional information from you to process your application. If we do, we'll contact you by email with additional instructions. The following are examples of situations where we'll follow up with you:

• We need additional documentation from you to verify your income.

• If you were enrolled as a "dependent student" anytime between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022, we may need information about your parents' income.

• We cannot match you to our loan records based on the information provided in your application.

looks like it is actually happening though. You can apply from now till December of next year.

They are using the IRS, this an example of why they might need additional information. I think for most people they won't need to submit anything extra.

It's possible people didn't file taxes those years. In that case, they'd basically ask for proof of income similar to what you'd use for taxes or an affidavit stating you made no money and did not file.

Edit: Also definitely still file even if you made no/very little money. You'll have a much easier time and probably still receive a "refund."

yeah and you can file your taxes for previous years and say you made no income. That is what some people did to get the stimulus checks as well

That's an obvious private-public partnership to mess with people's money. Also the design of TurboTax and ease of use basically has the site suggest the write-offs you should take. If you take time filling out the return item by item, you'll save money. It also tries you trick people into signing up to their paid service because they have your info.

      Terrible racket and deceptive marketing.
