right now its just an application. The confirmation email says they'll contact you if they need more documents or something

We'll contact you if we need additional information

We may need additional information from you to process your application. If we do, we'll contact you by email with additional instructions. The following are examples of situations where we'll follow up with you:

• We need additional documentation from you to verify your income.

• If you were enrolled as a "dependent student" anytime between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022, we may need information about your parents' income.

• We cannot match you to our loan records based on the information provided in your application.

looks like it is actually happening though. You can apply from now till December of next year.

They are using the IRS, this an example of why they might need additional information. I think for most people they won't need to submit anything extra.

It's possible people didn't file taxes those years. In that case, they'd basically ask for proof of income similar to what you'd use for taxes or an affidavit stating you made no money and did not file.

Edit: Also definitely still file even if you made no/very little money. You'll have a much easier time and probably still receive a "refund."

yeah and you can file your taxes for previous years and say you made no income. That is what some people did to get the stimulus checks as well

That's an obvious private-public partnership to mess with people's money. Also the design of TurboTax and ease of use basically has the site suggest the write-offs you should take. If you take time filling out the return item by item, you'll save money. It also tries you trick people into signing up to their paid service because they have your info.

      Terrible racket and deceptive marketing.

remember if you paid on loans in [some time window i don't remember] before this you can also get a refund maybe.

If you made voluntary payments during the payment pause (from March 13, 2020, through Dec. 31, 2022) and your current loan balance is below the amount of debt relief you’ll receive, after you successfully apply for and receive debt relief under the Administration's debt relief plan, we’ll automatically refund the amount you paid during the payment pause (only up to the remaining amount of your eligible debt relief).

Hence why the president should just forgive the loans. No application, then if the courts get mad, they can just respond, what are you going to put millions back in debt?

I would again like to remind everyone that, due to a decision by the scotus itself, it is perfectly legal for the potus to declare those judges to be terrorists and shoot them in the head in broad daylight and there's fuck all anyone can do about it, thanks obama.

Yeah if the gop wants to shitcan it the scotus will just say "lol nope" and scribble a bunch of dicks on the opinion because the law is whatever they say it is now. Potus should still do it, and then have them all shot bc they said he can legally do that if he wants.

Even if this supreme court looked at it, I would be surprised if they turned around and said that the department of education has no power over its own debt/lending and must collect on its own loans. It would essentially be stripping power from the executive branch which they won't do.

It seems like a gas station offering free snacks, and getting sued by their own customers saying "No! You have to charge us for these!"

There are some lawsuits launched against this but hopefully the courts move to slow to stop it. After the face it seems like it would be difficult to undo

I'm like 90% sure that since they're suing the feds the potus could just instruct the DoJ to say "lol get rekt losers!" And deny them the right to sue. There's some clause or something that says the government can just arbitrarily decide if you can sue or not. Biden has all the cards, and all the cards are aces, he just doesn't want to play his hand.

Student loan hack: not only are standard Fed loans eligible, but so are parent PLUS loans.

That means a family could 2x or 3x their loan cancellation 💸

Ex: if a parent making <$125k took out a PLUS loan for their kid and got a Pell grant themselves, they EACH get $20k cancelled

so from what i'm getting, basically everyone in college who hasn't graduated yet can't get a sliver of their debt paid off because of an arbitrary deadline :agony-shrooms:

I think it'll still to apply to debt that have already been taken out, so maybe not for brand new students

But for payments in the future there is a new income based repayment plan where people pay 5 percent of income and the govt covers the interest.

slightly off topic: what would be the best method/site to download a free/pirated copy of a sociology book?

I'm not seeing many textbooks on the sites where I pirate other media
