Most things integrated into Minecraft's main line used to be mods, these days. Like how the apiary mod which added bees as passively existing items was usurped by vanilla bees as mobs you can watch collecting nectar.
...They didn't have bookshelves which hold player written books in vanilla until NOW?
Really? I swear they did, because I used to stuff enchantment books in to them.

Vanilla bees do significantly less than apiary mods though.
