Hello users of Hexbear, we have wonderful news!

Due to the hard work of @makotech222@hexbear.net , @Ryaina@hexbear.net , @Sphere@hexbear.net , and the rest of our Development/Infrastructure team we have restored the chapo.chat Active sort!

You may now notice a fresher and more engaging feed, remember you can set default sort settings in your user settings including choosing Local, All, or Subscribed communities in addition to the post sort method.

We would also like to take this opportunity to begin another volunteer drive, if you are interested in volunteering as a moderator, please send in the application below via hexbear direct message or matrix message.

Element information

Element is a messaging app that lets you talk to people over the Matrix protocol.

To get started, check out this link, where you can choose to either download Element for your platform or, if on a computer, open it in a browser.

The instructions that follow are for the desktop application and the web application, but the process is similar on all apps:

Press "Create Account"

We host our own Matrix server, so if you want you can change matrix.org to chapo.chat.

This is completely optional; users who sign up with a matrix.org username can still talk to people with chapo.chat username.

(Note: It is chapo.chat, not hexbear.net. Also, registrations aren't always open on chapo.chat; if they're not, just create an account on matrix.org)

Fill in a username and password

Hit register, and you're done!

EXTREMELY hyped about the old active sort coming back. Are they also sending it to upstream Lemmy?

Not aware of any plans to try and merge it upstream at this time. Maybe if people start noticing our site's active-sort is considerably better than other instances' there could be some interest in doing so, but to my knowledge the Lemmy devs aren't looking to change their existing algorithm for active-sort right now.

Also, there's a slight tweak I made to keep the active sort as true to our original version as possible that would need to be undone to merge to Lemmy. I won't go too far into the details, but if a post ends up with a negative score (by getting downvoted), it can then get dropped from the rank-updating job that runs every 10 minutes, and upstream recently made an adjustment to the hot_rank function to prevent that. But obviously that doesn't matter to Hexbear since we don't have downvotes to begin with, so I didn't include that adjustment of theirs when implementing hot_rank_active (which reuses the core of the hot_rank function, hence the relevance).

Mods trying to recruit fresh meat. If you think you're applying to be a moderator, think again. You're going to be dedicated ass wipers. You'll be lucky if you're supplied any toilet paper.

Is Active Sort something that works with mobile Lemmy apps?
