The only exposure people in the West in the 80s/90s had to Africa/Asia was either seeing them being bombed on the news, movies about how sad Americans were that they were killing people over there, or charity ads/LiveAid type things where they'd depict these places as desolate places full of people who can't do anything for themselves.
