Resources For Understanding The War Beyond The Bulletins

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map, who is an independent youtuber with a mostly neutral viewpoint.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have good analysis (though also a couple bad takes here and there)

Understanding War and the Saker: neo-conservative sources but their reporting of the war (so far) seems to line up with reality better than most liberal sources.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict and, unlike most western analysts, has some degree of understanding on how war works. He is a reactionary, however.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent journalist reporting in the Ukrainian warzones.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

There's definitely some side stepping of accusations and propaganda like that, but it also comes from the fact that her big thing is just TheConversation™.

As though robust debate online between talking heads has a tangible material effect on the real world.

Addressing obvious absurd propaganda claims like "Russians stole 500 Ukrainian children last night for sinister unknown reasons" would distract from her core argument; that this war is hypocritical and she's tired of hypocrites lecturing her (both of which are true, but not important).

I have no idea whether she actually buys the grand stories of Chinese genocide or anything else, because they're all treated as either curve balls to let whizz by or occasionally to hit back as rhetorical arguments, not tangible issues.

That's why I gave up listening a long while ago, despite the fact that she seems to have some good takes amongst the crap too.

I think last time this came up I or someone else pointed out that 30% of Ukrainians are ethnic Russians and many of them have close relatives in Russia and either have or had dual citizenship.
