I don't remember the full story but I think there were 2 main things
They had some ballot measure that affected redistricting, and the NY Democratic party didn't do a damn thing to get people to vote correctly on it, and that threw seats to republicans.
Eric Adams ran on a campaign of "this place is a fucking shithole full of criminals and violence and you can't even go outside without getting cannibalized by roaming hordes of homeless people" and that... that makes people vote against the party in power.
EDIT: Oh also I just heard today that the NY democratic party is so corrupt and so intentionally demobilizing that when they actually needed people to mobilize they were incapable of it. They may get shaken up by the national machine if their incompetence is the deciding factor
