Big Five is a bit better on a few different measures. It doesn’t give you a science-Hogwarts house, so the incredible abuse that MBTI produces in people creating INTP tribes and such isn’t as present.
The main scientific argument for it is that it’s more reliable than mbti, as in, scores tend to be more consistent within people and external validation in the form of friends/ family evaluating you tend to have more consistency as well. With that said... personality is an incredibly complex thing that is far from being tightly defined in psychology. Trepanning is actually a decent analogy. Sometimes a patient has brain swelling and releasing pressure actually does save their life. But like, obviously the understanding isn’t actually there as to why.
Psychology isn’t quite as bad as total mysticism, but it definitely leaves a lot to be desired. The argument for big 5, for me, is that it’s less fun and so less prone to weird misuse, and also more rigorous, as much as science of personality can be that is.
Tell him you’re into an even cooler horoscope I mean personality framework: The Big Five. Which is like, marginally better tbh
like how bloodletting was marginally better than ye olde "drill a hole in the skull to release the evil spirits"
