TLDR: A reporter got a tip from a source that Russia fired into Poland. The source had been vetted in the past, but not for this story specifically. The reporter asked what to do. A senior editor decided to publish without second checking the source. When this blew up in AP’s face, they fired the OG reporter, not the senior reporter who actually published it.

TLDR of TLDR: AP fires reporter to protect senior editor.

"I can't imagine a US intelligence official would be wrong on this."

      That alone deserves firing.

And the senior reporter, and the intelligence official, and everyone who even touched this story. They knew damn well what they were doing - trying to start WWIII.

Yeah I mean what the actual fuck are they teaching in Journalism school? An investigative reporter should start with the baseline assumption that anyone at all with any vested interest in the story they are investigating is in some way hiding the truth either by lying or indirectly because they themselves are being lied to or are mistaken.

The wording is even worse. You don't think the source could be wrong? Who the fuck is your source on this? God? Anyone can be wrong for christ's sake. That's why people check stuff.

The severe martyr complex of libs can be just as dangerous as the "some people just want to watch the world burn" cynicism of chuddy edgelords.

Well I for one am happy that this reporter fell on his sword, because otherwise we'd have to hold the senior American intelligence official accountable and we cannot have that! Holding the government accountable for what they do would be unconscionable. Better to hold this farce among the self deluded rather than among the people who actually wield the levers of power.
