Hyperactive anime character behaviors/sounds usually reduce the joy I get from the rest of what I'm watching.

While I heard Studio Ghibli films aren't "real anime," their works are the most anime-like thing I love.

Flying Witch is a pretty chill slice of life anime.

    Akira is dead, dead serious

Jinroh: Wolf Brigade is likewise extremely serious.

Most of the Ghost in the Shell products. The only genki stuff are the Tachikomas, and there's a reason they're like that.

    Same with Appleseed.

Berserk. Uh. Berserk is very dark. It has all the content warnings.

That hyper active, exaggerated genki shit is a genre thing, not an anime thing. It's mostly kids shows and shonen stuff and what have you. There's lots of serious minded anime, or just stuff that's lighthearted by more grounded.

Even Durarara manages to be pretty surreal and high energy without really getting in to what you're describing.

Really, anime just means Japanese Animation, and you can find every imaginable genre from small kids shows to serious period dramas in their somewhere.
