Resources For Understanding The War Beyond The Bulletins

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. I recommend their map more than the channel at this point, as an increasing subscriber count has greatly diminished their quality.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have good analysis (though also a couple bad takes here and there)

Understanding War and the Saker: neo-conservative sources but their reporting of the war (so far) seems to line up with reality better than most liberal sources. Beware of chuddery.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are fairly brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. The Duran, of which he co-hosts, is where the chuddery really begins to spill out.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent journalist reporting in the Ukrainian warzones.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ Gleb Bazov, banned from Twitter, referenced pretty heavily in what remains of pro-Russian Twitter.

https://t.me/asbmil ~ Now rebranded as Battlefield Insights, they do infrequent posts on the conflict.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/riafan_everywhere ~ Think it's a government news org or Federal News Agency? Russian language.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ Front news coverage. Russian langauge.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of the really big pro-Russian (except when they're being pessismistic, which is often) telegram channels focussing on the war. Russian language.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Any Western media outlet that is even vaguely liberal (and quite a few conservative ones too).

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Last week's discussion post.

The Chinese State Council just released a new series of directives on "optimizing" the covid measures. Effectively they are taking some of the "loosened up" measured experimented in some localities and now adopting them on a national level — although it's helpful to keep in mind that "loosening up" is always relative and dynamic.

Here's no. 1 and 2 of the ten articles roughly translated

    一是科学精准划分风险区域。按楼栋、单元、楼层、住户划定高风险区,不得随意扩大到小区、社区和街道(乡镇)等区域。不得采取各种形式的临时封控。

One: precise and scientific designations of Risk Areas. High Risk Areas should be designated per a single building, division of a building, floor of a building, and/or a residence, and they must not be expanded without cause to cover a larger residential community, neighborhood, or district (townships), etc. No temporary lockdowns [i.e., locking down a whole building or residential community for 24hrs or even more when one resident is suspected to have a positive result in a "ten-samples-mixed-in-one-tube" PCR test and is waiting of the result of an individualized PCR test] of any form should be implemented.

Two: further optimization of PCR testing. No universal mandatory PCR testing should be implemented at the level of an entire administrative district [e.g., a whole city, with millions of residents, which has very often been the case over the past year], and the scope and frequency of mandatory PCR tests should be reduced. Antigen tests can be used instead based on public health needs. Those who work in high-risk professions and high-risk areas should follow the established rules and be subjected to mandatory regular PCR tests, while anyone else should be tested whenever they request so. Except for senior homes, orphanages, medical facilities, kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, and other special facilities, no proof of negative PCR test should be demanded for access, and nor should the health code be checked. As for important institutions [government bodies], major enterprises/firms, and certain other special facilities [vague here], the responsible regional administration can adopt public health measures as they see fit. For travelers between different administrative regions, no proof of negative PCR test should be demanded, nor should the health code be checked, and nor should an on-arrival PCR test be demanded.

Add: the third one seems interesting too in gauging what's actually happening.

Three: further optimization of quarantine measures. Those infected should be scientifically categorized for appropriate treatments. Asymptomatic patients and mild-symptom patients who have the means of at-home quarantine should generally be quarantined at home, but they can also choose to quarantine at quarantine centers as they wish. Health monitoring should be implemented and strengthened during such at-home quarantine, which should be lifted when the Ct value of their PCR tests are above 35 consecutively on the sixth and the seventh days of their quarantine. Those whose symptoms worsen should be transferred to designated hospitals for treatment. Close contacts who have the means of at-home quarantine should generally be quarantined at home for five days, but they can also choose to quarantine at quarantine centers as they wish. Said quarantine should be lifted when their PCR test is negative on the fifth day.
