If you can deal with turn-based gameplay, Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is a much deeper game. It's also free and open source.
Roughly speaking, Project Zomboid is to Cataclysm what Rimworld is to Dwarf Fortress. Streamlined, but a bit simpler and less stuff to do.
I fully agree with you (CDDA is fucking great), but I will add that Zomboid has multiplayer, which is the only reason I ever boot it up for, and Zomboid is definitely fun. But for a single player experience, CDDA is the way to go imo
Both of them are really good in their own way (for slightly different reasons) but I will take any opportunity to promote Cataclysm, it's awesome and not as well known as it should be.
