I've been watching some videos about it recently and it's piqued my interest. Apparently it's been going for over 9 years now and I'm only just now finding out about it.
If you can deal with turn-based gameplay, Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is a much deeper game. It's also free and open source.
Roughly speaking, Project Zomboid is to Cataclysm what Rimworld is to Dwarf Fortress. Streamlined, but a bit simpler and less stuff to do.
I fully agree with you (CDDA is fucking great), but I will add that Zomboid has multiplayer, which is the only reason I ever boot it up for, and Zomboid is definitely fun. But for a single player experience, CDDA is the way to go imo
Both of them are really good in their own way (for slightly different reasons) but I will take any opportunity to promote Cataclysm, it's awesome and not as well known as it should be.
pretty fun game ive been playing for the last few months. it's pretty complicated and difficult, but learning how the game works is satisfying and doesnt feel like a chore. it also has a ton of settings and mods you can tweak to curate your experience. would recommend.
over 9 years now
well the thing is someone allegedly stole or they otherwise lost the only laptop with the only copy of the game on it so they've been rebuilding it for the last like however many years since then, lol
It's good, but theres no end game. I honestly like playing without zombies as a like a life sim game.
To me the life sim is done so well.
Honestly I think an end game would ruin it - because then there'd be a "right" or "wrong" way to play the game. When the beauty and vibe of the game is to develop your own story of your character however you want.
Fun! Frequently updated! It's kinda like Minecraft in that once you learn how it works you've gotta figure out how to make it fun by coming up with self-imposed challenges, but also like minecraft it has multiplayer which makes it super fun in a totally different way.
It's kind of awesome. Lots of fun, and you can fuck around with all the settings to play it however you like.
Good game that you can come back to every few months/years to find a completely different game in its place. I think a portion of those 9 years was wasted on lost code (stolen laptop without backups) and other rewrites but it is fun.
Its main problem is that singleplayer is very lonely without npc interaction. Online play however on persistent servers was a lot of fun if that's still part of it, as was playing a private server with just one or two friends.
It's been a couple years now since I last played but I would recommend if you want to play a zombie game where you're genuinely vulnerable and every zombie is a real threat.
Really good but very freeform at the moment, you basically play to see how long you can survive (I think full NPC support and storylines are planned). Surprisingly atmospheric with a vibe that feels a lot like old school George Romero (which is definitely part of the appeal to me, even though I've burned out on zombies in general). The multiplayer is great when played with friends, too!
Amazing. It's such a great game.
You can play it a number of different ways. Construction zone/survival. Shoot em up zombie game (hard). The Sims except with zombies.
Multiplayer is great, as well.
Some complain there is no end game or that there is no story -- there is. You are telling your own story. It introduces each game as "This is how you died" that's the story. You are in a zombie apocalypse, and you make your own story, until you die.
I love the depth of skill development and crafting, and it gets updated all the time.
Anyway, I'm like 500 hours in, so it's been worth the $23 or whatever it costs.
