humiliating reminders to the ukrainian people that NATO destroyed what little democracy they had left in 2014 and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.

I never even considered this angle of it. I just assumed this represented the average Ukrainian's views. Might be because I live in :amerikkka: where most people's political views align pretty closely with whatever the media says.

It represents the views of liberal minded upper and middle class people in urban areas as well as actual fascists but not necessarily all Ukrainians. A significant portion of Ukrainians see NATO and Russia as equally responsible for the war, many Ukrainian refugees have fled to Russia and Zelensky has banned political parties accounting for probably over 60% of the electorate.

NATO is a radically anti-democratic force.

Ukraine and Russia didn't really have a hard border prior to the Maidan coup. A lot of that "Russia is kidnapping Ukrainian children!" is probably just kids who lived in Ukrain being reunited with family that live in Russia. It's very inconvenient to the narrative for anyone to remember how much the two states were still inter-linked right up until Ukraine devolved in to FAFO.
