There was a recent article on Sixth Tone that interviewed some people. Pretty much all of them said they welcomed reverting Zero Covid, but they’re upset it was done so suddenly rather than gradually transitioning which means a lot of supplies are out of stock and a bunch of people are sick
One of them mentioned having to take care of their immunocompromised mother, but they’re also going to visit relatives now that there are no restrictions. So RIP mom I guess
imo the 'gradual transition' people go on about doesn't exist in the face of omicron's transmissibility. it is a problem that requires an all or nothing response, people chose nothing and are now mad that they can't have their cake and eat it too.
I truly do not comprehend what people think they mean when they say “gradual transition.” Either you’re letting the virus spread and people die, or you’re trying to limit virus spread and protect lives. There’s no medium controlled level of spread where everything is fine.
Some amount of harm can still be reduced by efforts at mitigation. Pandora can't fit back in the bag, it seems no amount of (these) vaccinations will totally eliminate covid, but its silly to then say oh well no point doing anything at all. If China is having hospital capacity problems then it seems clear a more gradual phasing-out of zero covid would have helped
