Two eps from finishing ROP and finding it extraordinarily difficult. Nothing "bad" just trite and tired dialogue and character arcs mixed in with beautiful actors and scenery.

I saw some fascinating comments from you guys about it- especially the LOTR lore fanatics- I want to know what ROP does wrong lore-wise and want to watch a vid on it- but I don't want to search it through conventional channels cause there's a high likelihood the vid will spend 80% complaining about black and female representation.

Basically- where's the lore complaints vid that isn't :debate-me-debate-me: bonus points if they discuss the apparently mormon creatives spin on the lore.

This is a 15hr breakdown of everything wrong with RoP though it's a bit scattered in presentation. What's wrong? Hint: everything.

Real answer, having not watched RoP and only skimming the surface of deeper lore: they had very little rights to anything regarding the Second Age and are otherwise skirting the edges with characterizatons at best. It's just pretty fanfiction as far as I understand.

Sorry, I haven't sought out videos that would be of help.

This Tolkien mega-nerd YouTube channel set out to propose a way he would adapt the 2nd age had he only the rights to LOTR and the appendices. From what I've seen it's way better than RoP, even if a little narratively tropey. But then again, Tolkien was the trope-setter for high fantasy for better or worse, so it makes sense it feels a bit tired by now.

I originally said it was acceptable, but I only got about an episode and a half in.

I stopped watching when I heard about the

    spoiler

"oh neat Sauron's this sus fisherman dude" silliness and everything around that, and decided not to subject myself to that. :blob-no-thoughts:

Not a video but this is an interesting article that goes over why the show feels wrong. Be warned that the author is a massive lib, but by looking at the other articles on his site is very much into Tolkien.

I kinda wanted to get through this show. Its very very pretty, and I love the inclusivity, but its just so dull. I also don't like the "here's like 4 unrelated stories" style of storytelling because it makes it feel like nothing is going anywhere for soooooo long.

The key is to have the different characters in conflict with each other, which is why something like GoT succeeds while RoP fails.

If you haven’t seen it yet, we just finished and greatly enjoyed House of the Dragon. It’s not exactly the same as GoT and there are a number of annoying decisions the showrunners made (switching out the actors who played two main characters because they aged even though other characters who were the same age did not get new actors) but otherwise we really liked it, although we were riffing the whole time.

this is off topic but my favorite scene from power rings is when Galadriel is training the Numenors how to fight orcs.

here's the scene if you don't remember: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1UQ66P1XO0
