I worked as a substitute teacher for a while. This story will sound fake or I misread the situation, but it happened. It was a rowdy math class, poor school district, kids who were largely disinterested and I couldn't blame them. They seemed to fundamentally understand their lives at the moment were a stage in the school to prison pipeline. Half the kids had parents in jail.
I was trying to get them to focus on the lesson, just kinda basic 9th grade algebra, but it was a rowdy class. I was the substitute after all. Several of them hit me with the line, "We'll never need to know this." So I tried explaining maybe they'd work on spaceships one day. Statistically they're all disadvantaged, but I thought I'd be considerate. That seemed to turn them around actually, a few of them started asking me how that was possible, how to get a job at NASA, etc. They were actually really curious after that.
I think kids would do a lot better in school if they felt a reason to do it, or if curiosity were rewarded. Kids don't yet have the full arsenal of neoliberal ideology in their heads, they only know what they see and what they're told. Ghouls like this Telegraph journalist only see the future in terms of making more ghouls. I think kids are aware of that, they feel alienated from their own futures. They're aware adulthood is only lived in terms of serving capitalist profit, or just going to jail.

If you never learn maths, you won't be able to calculate how many bugs you'll have to eat in order to maintain a stable calorie intake. If you're the pod designer, you'll need maths to calculate the exact minimum amount of space a human is legally entitled to so you can avoid being sued for human rights abuses. You gotta think about the future.
