Have you had fun playing backups of games you legally own on physical media
lately? Dumped
any BIOS files
from the old consoles
you own?
I'm sure you have- after all, we're all about doing things legally and being above board here, aren't we?

In all honesty, I get why the official forums, subreddits, discords and what have you for different emulator projects have the anti-piracy stances they do- they don't want years of work being cease and desisted by Sony or Nintendo because of people linking to roms. I still think the pretense is funny
It's pretty sad that it's fairly common knowledge within the gaming world that anything older than 15 years old is worthless and/or abandoned. Yet we all have to pretend that we need to protect the IP holders and only those who own the holy grails of "physical copies" are allowed to make backups of their anointed artifacts for personal consumption.
One neat trick to stop a game from becoming public domain is to keep reselling it in digital format on stupid e-stores or mini consoles which are expensive raspberry pi's
The trick is to just get a raspberry pi and shove a terabyte of retroarch shit in there
Get with the times, grandpa! These days it's all about subscription services and cloud gaming (that can be turned off at a whim)! It's sooooo convenient :so-true:
🤮

unless it's a pokemon game, then you can still pay $29.99 for the used GBA cartridge
My favorite one is a speedrunner who gives out an "Amazon store link" to a copy of their speed game, which in actuality is just a google drive with a free download of it. They just have to be euphemistic or else Twitch could come down on them.

Some of them are really fucking annoying about it though. Someone closed a ticket on the rpcs github because the log files indicated it might've been a pirated copy :matt-jokerfied:
I see this a lot in PCSX2 forum posts when trying to find solutions to PS2 emulation issues :owl-pissed:
It's so fucking easy to pay lip service to the anti-piracy thing and then just pretend you don't see that the release group's name is in the log files. These fucking nerds.
I owned and personally backed up every game from every console released up until the year 2000, however I accidently and lost all of them.
Good thing I backed them up!
I don't even buy games anymore unless it's gonna get a lot of multiplayer time with friends. Everything else is unashamedly stolen lmao, nintendo can drink from my ass
It's hilarious how there are active Switch emulators and people playing leaked entire games before they are officially released
I played the entirety of Pokemon Scarlet 8 days before the commercial release.
I played Monster Hunter Rise 4 days before it's commercial switch release.
I played those games, online through the Ryujinx LDN build, sometimes a week before they came out. The switch emulation scene is amazing.
Emulator developers are incredibly talented people.
Honestly even as someone who's really enjoying Scarlet/Violet if you're playing it on an emulator odds are you're getting the better gameplay experience lmao
it even has working multiplayer....
Oh my friends and I have had an absolutely incredible time playing it emulated. It's become our go to putz about game when we aren't fooling around on TP/WW/BOTW multiplayer mods.
I know, it rocks. Nothing but respect for my motivated treatthief troops
I played Demon's Souls on RPCS3 this past October. Even posted about it on hexbear. With the 60FPS patch it was an excellent experience, even though I think the Dark Souls games advance the design significantly enough to be better games.
I did the same thing and played it through the online private servers. Game is still a blast and introducing it to friends with functional multiplayer was great.
Custom configuration for that game -> GPU settings -> "Write Color Buffers" check that box.
Another user answered the problem in a response to your question, but if you're ever having issues with a game be sure to check out the RPCS3 wiki to see if there are any settings you need to change (you can right click a game and adjust per-game settings) for better performance/compatibility https://wiki.rpcs3.net/index.php?title=Main_Page
I love receive and then sharing all my Linux ISOs!! :penguin-dance:
Anybody know good places to get isos for disk-based console emulators?

Edit:
Absolutely under no circumstances should you torrent without a VPN, unless you live in a very cool country. Here are some magnet links (if you don't know what this means, don't ask me. I barely know, myself!).

have been torrenting for over 15 years, never got clapped for itI'm under the heel of USA Comcast and they've never given a fuck. Is everyone else just pirating super new stuff and that's what's causing the problems?
Seems to be. Amazon is really on top of torrents from what I've heard.
archive.org
Seriously. You can get fullsets for most consoles or just download the games you want.
I have been playing a bit of LEGALLY OBTAINED twilight princess for the first time
it's pretty good, no idea how i missed playing it earlier on my ORIGINAL HARDWAREBased on Grimbeard's recent review I decided to emulate The Darkness. It was a hassle to get a PS3 and figure out how to dump games from it but boy oh boy is it worth it to do everything by the book
spoiler
Interestingly for RPCS3 you get the BIOS from Sony's own website, which is thoughtful of them and cuts out the middleman
There's a HD texture pack for Twilight Princess (Gamecube version) which looks AMAZING. You should really try it out if you're not that far into the game. Play that shit in 4K. Same goes for Windwaker. Shit's even better than the Nintendo remaster!
i'm not one for caring much about graphics, but i'll give it a shot, ty
It's worth it just for the smooth fonts and HUD graphics alone IMO.
There are multiplayer mods for Wind Waker and Twilight Princess if that's something you think you might enjoy too.
is dumping bios even legal? you could just say that violates dmca anti-circumventation anyways
I think dumping ROM (BIOS is just ROM stored on the motherboard) is in the same category as software end user license agreements. Big IP will tell you it is illegal to reverse engineer your own property and threaten to litigate, but they are afraid of what might happen if they actually take it to court. On the other hand, they will absolutely sue if you are distributing their IP (the dumped ROM).
I think they're mainly trying to avoid people sharing links to bios files and roms on channels related to the emulators to avoid console manufacturers throwing their entire legal weight at them. What you do with your own hardware inside your own home is none of the devs' business.
CXBX-R and XEMU are actually able to play many games, I think XEMU is considered the more advanced one but CXBX-R may have the upper hand in some games IIRC. If you use the iso dumps linked in this thread you'll notice that neither takes regular isos though and you'll need to convert them to different formats for both
Is N64 emulating still shit everywhere? I keep wanting to play Banjo and every time get sad that rendering just doesn't work
Project 64 ran fine on my windows xp desktop from like...15 years ago.
It runs sometimes fine but I couldn't get my fav games (DK64 and Banjo Tooie) to play at all. Zeldas all worked fine tho. Just inconsistent is all I meant
I played Banjo-Kazooie just fine. The sequel ran absolutely terribly and I gave up on it, however.
yeah i wanted to play tooie. the first one is better but I like the music from the 2nd one
Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise was my emulation dream for a long while and Xenia the Xbox 360 emulator has been in a state where it's quite playable and getting better.
And it's awesome, I love being able to play it again on my PC, thank you emulator devs, thank you people keeping the roms available online.
