That said, the beatles absolutely played a role in allowing the white "left" to retreat into academia and art instead of engaging with the black power movement that was actually doing shit and getting murdered for it.

you're good! I do think that's a solid point and I certainly think it's worthwhile to investigate the relationship between art and politics. I just remember back in high school people saying they hated the beatles like they were saying workers of the world unite or something. it just gets exhausting to hear the same conversation played out a million times.
