President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Russia was suspending its participation in the New START treaty with the United States that limits the two sides' strategic nuclear arsenals.
"Of course, we will not be the first to do [test weapons]. But if the United States tests, then we will," he said. "No one must be under any dangerous illusions that global strategic parity can be destroyed."
As tragic as it is - I get it. After shit like Cuba, Iraq, Israel, Iran, etc. why would you trust the US not to do something and blame you for retaliation? It's a grizzly, barbaric way to kill people and damage the planet, but comrade, the US would do it and then be self-righteous about how sad they were to have to do it to you.
WSJ and NYT columnists would be falling over each other to write heart-wrenching tales about how bad it made the psychopathic evangelical christian officers feel to press the launch buttons for a nuclear first strike
I read a very illuminating article on the purpose of Star Wars. It was never intended to shoot down all the missiles.
The math was that a US first strike using intermediate range ballistic missiles in Europe could kill enough of the USSR's ICBMs to greatly reduce the USSR's retaliatory launch. Star Wars was supposed to thin out the surviving missiles. Not to stop all of them, but to make the retaliatory strike survivable within certain parameters.
The whole point of Star Wars and contemporary nuclear missiles was to allow the US to launch a first-strike to slaughter the entire Soviet population and survive the retaliation with only 100 or 150 million causalities. You know, more than enough to get the economy back up and running.

Wanted to make a Star Wars joke but the last two sentences really took the air out of that balloon for me.
