I think it is just the extended universe fatigue lol. I actually sat down and watched the 4k versions of the trilogy awhile back and kept remarking to my roommate that I'd forgotten how solid each film is by itself, compared to like The Hobbit trilogy where each as a standalone film (besides maybe the first) is terrible and as a trilogy is subpar at best.
Has it been long enough that LoTR is no longer a beloved movie trilogy? Or is this hate for the shitty extended universe?

About 40% of the US population are Xers or Millenials so I think it's fair to say a lot of people still think highly of the 2001 LotR trilogy.
