3 suspects in Gov. Degamo killing arrested (cw murder, video inside mass shooting)

    Police identified the suspects as:

    • 50-year-old former soldier Joric Labrador y Garido, a resident of Cagayan De Oro

    • 42-year-old former Army Ranger Joven Aber y Calibjo, a resident of La Castellana, Negros Occidental

    • 42-year-old former Army Ranger Benjie Rodriguez y Buladola, a resident of Mindanao.

Gunmen killed Degamo and five other victims Saturday morning while the governor was distributing aid at his residence in Pamplona.

According to investigators, there were six shooters wearing pixelized uniforms and carrying long firearms.

The suspects used three getaway vehicles, a Mitsubishi Pajero with plate number NQZ 735, an Isuzu pickup with plate number GRY 162, and a Mitsubishi Montero with plate number YAP 163.

Degamo served as Governor of Negros Oriental from January 5, 2011, but was initially unseated by a rival in the May 2022 elections.

However, his rival's proclamation as provincial governor was annulled, and Degamo's victory was upheld by the Supreme Court after the votes obtained by a nuisance candidate were credited in favor of Roel Degamo. — DVM, GMA Integrated News

Degamo was a right wing nationalist party.

Degamo lost the gubernatorial race to Pryde Henry Teves in the May 2022 elections. However, back in October 2021, during the run-up to the elections, Degamo filed an electoral complaint to have another gubernatorial candidate—an almost namesake known as "Ruel Degamo"—be declared a nuisance candidate meant to "confuse and deceive" the electorate.

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) ruled in the governor's favor, however, the latter candidate filed an appeal. The election pushed through before COMELEC made a final ruling on the case. In June 2022, a defeated Degamo filed a petition for mandamus at the Supreme Court, which compelled the COMELEC to resolve the case. On October 3, 2022, the COMELEC upheld their earlier decision and transferred votes obtained by Ruel to Roel, proclaiming him the election's true winner

Degamo's killing underscores that even local politicians are not immune from high-profile gun violence that has persisted despite the government’s pledge to combat it.

Last month, Gov. Mamintal Alonto Adiong Jr. of southern Lanao del Sur province was wounded and four of his bodyguards killed in an attack on their convoy. Police said they killed one of the suspects in a clash.

In a separate recent attack, unidentified men reportedly wearing police uniforms fired at the van of northern Aparri town Vice Mayor Rommel Alameda, killing him and five companions in northern Nueva Vizcaya province. The suspects remain at large.

Crimes, decades-long Muslim and communist rebellions, and other security concerns are some of the major problems inherited by Marcos, who took office in June last year
