First up for this Sunday Slop Night is Elia Kazan's A Face in the Crowd (1957), starring Andy Griffith as a rabble-rousing country singer who works his fans into a reactionary frenzy with the help of greedy TV executives and advertisers looking to make a quick buck. Think Network, but 20 years earlier. It is currently ranked #243 on Letterboxd's Top 250 films of all time. After that, it's Brian de Palma's cult-classic rock opera, Phantom of the Paradise (1974), a modernized rock-opera version of Phantom of the Opera, featuring songs by Paul Williams. It is something of a companion piece to The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
