I remember I originally got this on a disk in a box of Kellogg's Nutri-Grain. Got it on Steam recently and it didn't work out-the-box with proton; but the community expansion (virtually an entirely rebuilt game) works perfectly.

To get the community expansion to work simply:

  • download the Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds Expanding Fronts .zip
  • unzip the content into the head folder which, for me was: ~/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/common/'STAR WARS - Galactic Battlegrounds Saga'
  • drag and drop the contents of the newly generated GAME folder into the folder named Game and accept all merges and replacements.
  • in the Game folder, delete the current player.exe and rename the file battlegrounds_x2.exe to player.exe
  • on launching the game in steam or however you acquired the original game, you will get a configuration screen, mess with the resolution in the configuration screen, it took me three changes to get mine perfect.

Clearly a reskin of AoE2, but it was fun. Never tried the campaign, but played a good amount of the multiplayer way back when.

As is tradition with AoE and AoE clones, I spent a lifetime just map making for skirmishes :read-theory:

Yeah! It was good, kinda felt like an expansion to AoE II, the flying units changed things up a good bit, and ofc new campaigns. Never played the community expansion tho.

I think the main thing I love about this game, other than being just a good clone, was the soundtrack. This expansion other than having alternate campaigns and new factions (including the Black Sun crime syndicate) apparently has an expanded soundtrack.

Lmao time to try this out I guess. Did anybody ever play that other Star Wars RTS, Empire at War?

I was OBSESSED with this game. There was an expansion pack called Clone Campaigns that added the Confederacy and Old Republic.

My first gaming clan was centered around this game. I had this on a Mac and played this on GameRanger.

I remember winning games by garrisoning airspeeders in my besieged Rebel fortresses and then microing the fuck out of 10 of them as my allies macro'd.

This game is honestly better than AoE2. Theres more ranged attacks which allows for more harassment.

They also have fucking gungan submarines. YOOO this game kicks ass.
