entire decades of television are completely unpalatable due to the inclusion of laugh tracks

i have tried so many times but i just can't tolerate them at all

Some of my favorite comedies never had laugh tracks. Trailer Park Boys comes to mind. :I-was-saying:

The argument is that being funny wasnt the end of the sitcom. That it was meant to be :comfy:. That the laugh track was a form of interpassivity. It's not that people laughed because the laugh track. People heard laughter and got a tiny mental recharge. It is my opinion that the one of the reasons podcasts blew up is because it has that same interpassvity. Where listeners get that tiny relief from their alienation.

That it was meant to be :comfy: . That the laugh track was a form of interpassivity.

I suppose that's true for other people, but for me it's not comfortable; it's grating to me. I got a tiny mental drain instead of a recharge.

It is my opinion that the one of the reasons podcasts blew up is because it has that same interpassvity.

I guess it checks out for me that I hate podcasts and find them unbearable to listen to.

It's like having a big light up sign over the TV telling you when to laugh

That's exactly why I hate its inclusion. It feels aggressively condescending, even vaguely authoritative in the way an obnoxious relative that tells an edgy bigoted or misogynistic joke expects you to laugh or else you're the problem. "What was just said was funny! LAUGH!" :capitalist-laugh:

Once again it should be explained. A live studio audience and a laugh track are not the same thing.

There are a handful of shows that I enjoyed that had laugh tracks but that was in spite of the laugh tracks.

"I Love Lucy," for example, remains timelessly funny with only a few parts that aged very poorly, but even then, the audience laughter moments (I assume it was a live studio audience back then) felt more like an early version of what we now call parasocial bonding with I N F L U E N C E R S. :heated-gamer-moment:

At best, laugh tracks are just annoying. Many shows I have tried feel aggressively condescending and patronizing with laughtracks and make it hard for me to laugh, let alone enjoy the show at all, because it feels too forced. "What was said was funny! Halo(tm)(r) Night is a funny concept! Laugh, consumer! Laugh!" :capitalist-laugh:

Famously, the laugh track in MASH was something that was forcefully inserted via executive meddling. I assume it's the case with most comedies.

there are shows with laugh tracks that are funny, but it really can ruin it. That 70's Show is insane with the laughter. like if any audience laughed that much they would be in hysteria.
