I've been getting the suspicion that there's alot of great recent anime that I've not noticed in the deluge of trash.

Would appreciate any suggestions as to stuff really worth checking out.

To give an indication of anime that I've loved/liked:

  • Serial Experiments Lain
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion
  • Studio Ghibli
  • Ghost in the Shell
  • Revolutionary Girl Utena
  • Akira
  • Cowboy Bebop
  • Samurai Champloo

    Thanks.

I can definitely fuck with the mecha/gundam style stuff in general. Both as great entertainment and also for more intense content like in NGE.

What I loved in NGE was the mix of psychological themes with metaphysical ruminations. If you know some stuff like that wud be much appreciated. Peeps have already mentioned Ergo Proxy and Cyberpunk Wallrunners, which I'll check.

Also like straight-up more conventional mecha action are welcome, especially if the other aspects slap

TTGL has some really fucking cool elements. It also has some serious :libertarian-alert: :awooga: going on unfortunately.

Even hexbear users can't avoid recommending :libertarian-approaching: anime but some people here are adamant that it's not a big problem

Me watching TTGL: "Huh, Yoko must be a few years older because she acts more mature than Simone or Kamina"

Me after googling Yoko's age: :squidward-nervous:

Not even sure that the show explicitly states any of their ages at any point, you can probably head-canon it however you want. I'm pretty sure in the case of TTGL the stated age of the characters by the company is pretty much purely for marketing them to that age group as the target audience particularly as all of their behaviour reflects something more like 2-4 years older than stated.

Not like there's even a source manga or novel either as it's anime-original. It's literally just plucked from marketing material.

the best mecha out there is definitely gundam. watch 0079 for sure, it looks its age but it holds up and it does the psychological metaphysical really well. if you like it than maybe check out zeta, but it's a big step down imo. ibo and witch from mercury are more recent and are less metaphysical (so far, wfm isn't done) but are still good. unicorn probably won't mean as much for you unless you've seen at least 0079, but wfm and ibo are both completely separate shows
