I've been getting the suspicion that there's alot of great recent anime that I've not noticed in the deluge of trash.

Would appreciate any suggestions as to stuff really worth checking out.

To give an indication of anime that I've loved/liked:

  • Serial Experiments Lain
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion
  • Studio Ghibli
  • Ghost in the Shell
  • Revolutionary Girl Utena
  • Akira
  • Cowboy Bebop
  • Samurai Champloo

I'd recommend Space Dandy- it's made by the guy who made Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.

Not recent: Psycho-Pass, Ergo Proxy, maybe Raildex (A Certain Scientific Railgun, A Certain Magical Index, etc.)

    Somewhat recent: Cyberpunk Edgerunners

      Super. Thanks for that.

You know any more good Cyberpunk, sci-fi, or Lovecraftian style stuff work checking? Like I've been very interested in checking out Junji Ito's work.

For sci-fi, I will recommend Steins;Gate. It overlaps with some of your other interests you mentioned in the comments and it's one of my favorites. Made in Abyss is somewhat sci-fi, but not primarily, and that's an anime I'd recommend just generally.

Junji Ito's Uzumaki is supposed to be released this year, I think. That is a great manga to read, if you're open to manga. You can read the whole thing in one (long) sitting. I couldn't put it down.

I would love to but I don't know if I have the time or energy because knowing myself I'd have to both read the manga and watch the anime i.e. I'll die before finishing it or it will outlive me and I'm too spiteful for that.

Cool thanks for the suggestions. They all look great. Knew about Mod Psycho but never checked.

Yeh I guess I did cast a wide net.

I'm down in principle for more cute, laid-back stuff as well (recently watched Carol and Tuesday with a friend).

That being said, generally what I love about animation (and I've been struck by it more strongly when watching anime as opposed to western animation) is the ability of the medium to really convey mind-bending ideas about reality and subjectivity in (often strange) ways that film struggles to do (Lain, NGE and Ghost in the Shell all fit here, I'd say Akira as well due to the Buddhist influences/interpretations). Series that engage in metaphysical/philosophical questioning or themes, that explore psychological ideas. Also a good dose of moral dilemmas. I have a penchant for cyberpunk (and sci-fi or fantasy more generally) and Lovecraftian stuff (loved Berserk, the manga and the 90s anime) so no worries on sfw or CW as I'm okay with pretty much anything (unless really beyond the pale, but obvs people on here won't suggest those). One thing I loved in Lain was the taking advantage of the cinematic form (composition, editing, pace, mood, etc.) to convey the changes (but also repetition and eventual ambiguity regarding time, chronology, and identity) in the POV, thus subjectivity we share in as the viewer.

@wombat what are all the good animes we've watched (most of them have been good)

Project Ako and Nausicaa are the big ones I remember really liking. Planetes was cool but the two main characters acted very silly at times.

So if you want some really cool/weird sci-fi, check out Noein. I have been rewatching it on crunchy and surprisingly it still holds up rly well.

Also just want to re-up Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. It's really good.

A few of the best / most memorable from my decades of anime viewing...

    Mushishi (Supernatural, vibes)

    Monster (Incredible slow burn thriller/mystery)

Any Mecha by Tomino (0079, Zeta, Space Runaway Ideon) (He's simply the best in Mecha)

Shensekai Yori (Very Unique Fantasy / Dystopia)

How can you forget the one two punch of Gunbuster and Diebuster comrade!

All these are excellent recommendations, but imo Gurren Lagann is simply the third in a trilogy starting with Gunbuster.

Edit: I forgot, Kill la Kill is the spinoff side story.

Holy shit comrade! I wish I could go back and watch them for the first time. Be sure to watch in Gunbuster -> Diebuster order.

Also forgive Gainax for running out of money in the last episode (of Gunbuster), but trust me the ending is worth it.

Noriko, Kazumi, Nono, and Lal'C are some of the best characters Gainax has done.

Fair warning, it's a Gainax show so be prepared for :awooga: ,etc.

      Thanks.

I can definitely fuck with the mecha/gundam style stuff in general. Both as great entertainment and also for more intense content like in NGE.

What I loved in NGE was the mix of psychological themes with metaphysical ruminations. If you know some stuff like that wud be much appreciated. Peeps have already mentioned Ergo Proxy and Cyberpunk Wallrunners, which I'll check.

Also like straight-up more conventional mecha action are welcome, especially if the other aspects slap

Not even sure that the show explicitly states any of their ages at any point, you can probably head-canon it however you want. I'm pretty sure in the case of TTGL the stated age of the characters by the company is pretty much purely for marketing them to that age group as the target audience particularly as all of their behaviour reflects something more like 2-4 years older than stated.

Not like there's even a source manga or novel either as it's anime-original. It's literally just plucked from marketing material.

the best mecha out there is definitely gundam. watch 0079 for sure, it looks its age but it holds up and it does the psychological metaphysical really well. if you like it than maybe check out zeta, but it's a big step down imo. ibo and witch from mercury are more recent and are less metaphysical (so far, wfm isn't done) but are still good. unicorn probably won't mean as much for you unless you've seen at least 0079, but wfm and ibo are both completely separate shows

I'm only (mostly) gonna recommend stuff I watched and really dug, there's a number of great shows I might have missed and a bunch of decent/okay shows out that I did watch too but I'm ignoring those cos otherwise the list will be too long. Also only going back to 2018 bcos any more and I'll feel really old. Also I have huge genre blindspots, so other posters could probably recommend better romance stuff.

    Really Recent Shows:

    • Chainsaw Man
    • Bocchi the Rock
    • Gundam: Witch from Mercury
    • Cyberpunk Edgerunners

    Recent-ish Shows:

    • SpyxFamily
    • Vinland Saga
    • Kaguya-Sama: Love is War
    • Mob Psycho 100
    • Demon Slayer
    • Jujutsu Kaisen
    • Sonny Boy
    • Eighty-Six
    • Odd Taxi
    • Zombie Land Saga
    • The Promised Neverland (just pretend that Season 2 doesn't exist)
    • Violet Evergarden
    • SSSS Gridman
    • Yuri on Ice
    • A Place Further than the Universe (haven't watched it yet but comes highly recommended)

Interesting shows that maybe didn't stick the landing:

    • Flip-Flappers
    • Deca-Dence
    • Wonder Egg Priority (Another one I haven't watched but looked kinda interesting)

Shows you really should watch because you seem to have good tastes:

    • Mushishi
    • The Tatami Galaxy + the rest of Masaaki Yuasa's work
    • Kino's Journey (same director as Serial Experiments Lain)
    • Paranoia Agent + Satoshi Kon's stuff
    • Your Name + Makoto Shinkai's stuff
    • Madoka Magica

Your "Interesting shows that maybe didn't stick the landing" are all things I've watched, but forgot they exist. They all weren't bad, and kind of refreshing. I'd add Urusekai Picnic.

If you don't mind very violent things with great characters and plot (it gets way less violent with the second season), Vinland Saga has been the best adaptation i've watched in recent years.

I think so, definitely. Season 1 is pretty much a shot-for-shot remake of the prologue, with great animation, fight choreography and voice acting. Season 2 is halfway done by now, and it should cover all of the farmland saga arc. The anime has fixed some pacing and storytelling issues that the author hoped he could've handled better, and while the animation is a bit rougher, the voice acting and cinematography are top notch. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
