I want to know if it would be worth putting time towards this instead of building something similar.

"he felt he had no other way to be seen than shooting nine year olds" is a fucking unhinged thing to say in any context
also fuck you for implying i would be fine with it if the shooter was cis

This trans person was a victim of the tragedy of being oppressed and isolated by society. He was not a victim of the tragedy of him deciding to go shoot up a school and kill children. And tying his trans-ness as causal to him being a mass shooter (as opposed to his white masculinity or some specific aspect of his life) is irresponsible and dangerous.

Put aside the morality for a minute. Let’s say instead of children he killed some fascist activists. This would still not be the societal moment for trans activists to claim him as their own. Notice how long it took for cryptofascist politicians and activists to stop denouncing people who were openly self-identified fascists? That’s the playbook. And they’re not even that good at it. So even if we did find his actions good, we wouldn’t have the organizational power or mass support to claim him.

We know what needs done. And it wasn’t this. This was an actively detrimental act that shouldn’t be supported by activists.

Humanizing a mass shooter directly after a shooting and speculating about potential motivations that make them more relatable is an attempt to, at the very least, downplay their actions. We know this when Fox News does it to cishet white dudes. I don’t know why it’s harder to see when it’s a trans white dude.

That might be the case. I don’t care about their intentions because this is not an internal conversation within the org about the writer(s) of the statement. I understand writing statements like this on a time crunch is difficult and that it may have been an error. Even granting that, the impact is the same. Whether there are people in the group that recognize that isn’t something that’s worth speculating about unless someone here is a member.
