The latest Shinkai work is just as good as all others.
It’s another coming-of-age adventure with a splash of romance and drama, his signature fantastic visuals, and paired with the otherworldly music of his regular companion, RADWIMPS.
His sincerity and love for modern life, composed of the juxtaposition of past and present, city and nature, youth and tradition, of ordinary folk in extraordinary situations, makes you forget all worries and nuisances of life for a couple hours. And once it was over, I at least felt a lot lighter and happier.
It’s a messy film, with some cliches. And it doesn’t replace Your Name as my personal favourite. But, in my opinion, nothing can top your first Shinkai film anyways. And if you haven’t had the pleasure of watching one on the big screen, then Suzume will be a great start to your Shinkai journey.
In short, go watch it and feel something that modern Hollywood seems too “cool” and cynical to give you. I’ll be listening to the soundtrack while crying.
I get teary eyed when shonen protagonists are using the power of friendship and their theme music starts playing.
Joke's on you. I'm emotionally broken; damn near everything makes me ugly cry.
Then you’ll be freaking bawling while watching the film. So many beautiful, emotional scenes. And that MUSIC .
Word. I'll keep an eye out. I just downloaded a couple of the director's other movies.
So far 5 Centimeters per Second, Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below, and Voices of a Distant Star. I just added the Director to Sonarr and am searching for them one at a time when the server isn't busy.
Oh man, you’ll have a blast.
Don’t forget to post here when you’re done. :sit-back-and-enjoy:
I’m emotionally broken; damn near everything makes me ugly cry.
Coming from someone for whom it took meds+years of therapy to be able to barely tear up at very emotional moments... i'd take crying from any emotion than feeling nothing at all.
I just got back from seeing this movie and I 100% agree. For me it was even better than Your Name, though I love both dearly. Shinkai's message of choosing life, the humanity that is so evident in every frame, the way he let's moments breathe... He's a master of his craft. What a wonderful film. I even cried during random moments of kindness done by strangers to Suzume. A very emotional feature.
I think as he’s gotten older, he’s started seeing life in a bit different way too. Compare the sadness and tragedy of 5 cm per second to his newer works. That core is still there, but it’s wrapped inside and punctuated with a lot more hope and happiness. It’s why, even though I love that movie, I just cannot watch it again lol.
Gonna be honest, I saw ads for this & immediately understood that this production is not for me at all.
I'm still gonna post just to boost the thread for people who are interested, but for the most part I don't like
coming-of-age adventure with a splash of romance and drama...
So that's gonna have to be a pass for me. :shrug-outta-hecks:
Part of Shinkai’s appeal are the gorgeous visuals paired with, nowadays, the music of RADWIMPS but the story is entirely coming-of-age so if you can’t stand that, you won’t like the films.
If you’re interested in analysis, there are a couple really cool videos going into Shinkai’s work by Mother’s Basement and Beyond Ghibli. You might enjoy the videos.
Anyways, thanks for the comment for the algo!
The man keeps making the same movie over and over, and I never get tired of it. I don't think he has the most groundbreaking or diverse filmography, but what he does he does very well, and makes me tear up every time.
Oh shit it's out already! I'm going to scramble to make and to watch it and shall report back later
His sincerity and love for modern life,
No wonder why "Weathering with you" was mostly an ad for local snack brands and maccas...
I think he just likes McD lol.
Edit: I have been INDICATED.
These McD scenes weren’t in the movie, btw. They literally made them for this ad.
Well, there was one brief view of the Golden Arches, followed by some people eating a burger in a car. But that’s it!!!
Watched it today and enjoyed it---really glad I went in blind. Even though the scenes which were supposed to be super emotional mostly fell flat for me, I really loved the overall vibe of the movie and the warmth of the characters Suzume met along her journey. Also was fun to actually recognize some of the oldies that popped up, including this one from the karaoke scene. And of course, Shinkai never disappoints in the visual department.
One of my friends already saw this movie. Upon hearing that I'll see it this weekend, he's down to go see it again! What a recommendation goddamn
sorry, I can't support Shinkai's love of problematic age gap romance. I liked the movie for the most part though.
You can obviously have your own interpretation but this video and the comments sums up my feelings (spoilers for the movie).
the comments
@Richard Wang: I like to think when she said "I'm going to find the person that I love" before jumping into the gate, she meant herself, not Souta
@BOOP 🐻: I'm not too critical of the romance cuz to me it's not what defined the film, so to me it was enough, but can see where you're coming from
There is also some discussion on the subreddit if you’re interested.
