CNN is so obnoxious covering this shit. I still posit there's a lot of americans that want a royal family and a king, given our obsession with presidents and their stupid families.
I always thought this argument was stupid, even if the monarchy is ”profitable” that doesn't mean having one is right. If the UK relegalized slavery and it was profitable, using the same logic slavery would be good.
into the Treasury, they also contribute significantly to economic growth in general — £67.5 billion annually
It's because they're business owners and landlords. The monarchy isn't a value add by itself. You could literally strip the titles and remove the ceremonies and they'd still have the same impact on economic growth. They're literally just part of the capitalist class.
Reactionaries: In a capitalist economy decisions are made based on rational reasons, not emotional.
Also reactionaries: When prince Bob joins the trade delegation, foreign business leaders will sign contracts that they otherwise wouldn't.
Fun fact: the scepter exists because when you were around the king, nobody was allowed to have weapons. But the king got a big club to swing if anyone got uppity. After time, it started getting more ornate until you get these things. Which would still be pretty good in a fight.
Most parliaments still have a guy whose job is to tackle anyone who gets too handsy and club them with a mace. The guy still exists, but he's usually old, and the mace still exists, but it's usually gaudy and symbolic.
Tabitha nicked it. She's currently half way up a chimny in bedford, hissing aggressively at the police cordon.
It's too late, I've already fully bought in to the Michael Jackson theory.
They look so silly. We did a coronation in my larp group once. Everyone was struggling to keep from laughing the whole time.
When you’re reading The Game and just read the chapter on “peacocking”.
