There's an interesting part in Gao's "Battle for China's Past" in which he convincingly argues that positive portrayals of the west are mostly the result of the CPC directly promoting these stories and cultivating a positive image of foreign life in general. This was largely the result of the liberalization of the economy, so leaders wanted positive views of the "international community" they were trying to enter.
