    I know it's pointless to complain about this now, but literally the entire concept of "networking" is a tacit admission that there is no such thing as meritocracy, and yet somehow still blame you for not trying hard enough.

      God my sociology class on social stratification was the most depressing and anxiety inducing class I've ever taken. Like realising that the prof, and 60 students are nodding along with the idea that social relationships should be exploited to propel a career, treated as 'social capital'? Chilling. Realising that as an autistic person suffering from a severe level of social anxiety, to the point where I'm only barely able to talk to professors about stuff now, after years of school, and that sets me behind everyone else by years caused me panic attacks almost every class it was talked about. Fuck networking.

      I see it as a way to enforce the myth of meritocracy. The implication is that everyone can do it and if it didn’t do anything to help you, you either didn’t do it right or were too lazy with it to meet enough people.
