A giraffe is called a kameelperd, (camel-horse), a stapler is called a Papiervampier (paper vampire) as some kind of funny slang, a hippopotamus, which live in freshwater is a seekoei (sea cow), if something is flat is "pap", etc
Because it basically is. The Huguenots, which became the Afrikaners, are a mix of Europeans from the Netherlands, Germany and France for the most part. It's why so many Afrikaners have French or German sounding surnames.

Afrikaans is funny though. It's like Dutch but somehow worse, and even weirder phonemes.
It's easier for me to understand than Dutch, but that's probably because I learnt Afrikaans in school lol.
