A common phenomenon when interacting with a genre that you're not familiar with (of ANY type of media) is that you initially only see the similarities between various works, which can make them seem kind of samey and boring. It's only after developing familiarity with the genre do you see the art of working within a tight existing framework, one with a depth of history. A fan with a rich understanding of the genre will see the penumbra of the new contributions of the artist to the existing framework. That depth of communication between the artist and the audience is a beautiful thing that cannot be easily developed, nor the experience of it communicated to lay people. If you try to describe it to them, you might come off sounding like a lunatic describing an incomprehensible religious experience.
