denver nuggets as in gold nuggets because the west was supposedly settled by plucky frontiersmen panning for gold (in reality it was settled by white supremacists backed up by military violence against native communities that they were stealing land from). so calling the team the denver thieves would be more accurate.
They and the locals would love being called the "Denver Bandits".
