Context: Admin of small friends server announced earlier today his mom was in the hospital and may be in trouble. Comes back later with this announcement.

Multiple people have told me they may have made the same mistake, including two server members who said they thought he meant that too. But god I'm incredibly embarrassed.

    Honest mistake, just unfortunate timing.

Why is it that people avoid using words like "died" or "dying" like they're vulgar or grotesque?

They don't want to acknowledge it, sort of manifest or reify the death of the loved one or mortality in general when they speak. It might be because they haven't accepted death as a part of life, or they think they should be above it. For more normal people, it probably just makes them uncomfortable, of they were raised to not discuss the processes of life so directly(can't say sex, fuck, or pregnant, not shitting but releaving oneself, can't call it a period but a time of the month, and so on.)
