I prefer to think of it this way:
Idealism: The belief that ideas shape the world around us, that humans have ideas and then those ideas change material conditions.
Materialism: The belief instead that material conditions shape human ideas. That the conditions humans find themselves in create the ideas they have.
Or, what comes first? The idea of a chicken? Or the egg?

It has not occurred to any one of these philosophers to inquire into the connection of German philosophy with German reality, the relation of their criticism to their own material surroundings.
Everyone who talks like this should have a pile of philosophy of science anthologies dropped on them.
