I've been trying to encourage the black students in my classes to try to get into college (with as many grants as I can possibly turn them towards; I can't in good conscience recommend most student loans) and I think a lot of them, next semester, are going to be able to correctly point at this current event and say "why bother?"
I wish I could do more than care. I've considered outright lying to some students about their chances and prospects in the hopes they beat the odds, but the best I can do is put the most positive framing I can on a bleak situation. "Yeah, it sucks and the odds are stacked against you, but..."
