I've told this story before so sorry for that but I had a job with a shitty union. The company provided shitty benefits but it was at least something.
Then the company decided they'd keep the benefits for existing hires but anyone new wouldn't get them. Figured we'd say "fuck you, got mine." The shitty union finally did something and we were gonna strike. The company said "fuck it, strike, we'll just hire scabs.
Then the Teamsters came into play and said they wouldn't deliver to any location that was striking. The company caved and all the new people got their benefits. Solidarity forever. And Go Teamsters! That was the first time I saw unions standing together and I'll never forget it.
If the teamsters strike while the current contract is still in effect, they will be legally held liable for all damages and losses accrued to UPS as it it a breach of contract. The Teamsters are currently telling UPS to make their final offer so as to show the rank-and-file what's been offered and put it to a vote of accepting or declining the offered contract. And should that contract be ratified by the UPS teamsters, then by august 1st the new contract goes into effect. Should the UPS teamsters vote to decline the contract, then on august 1st, they have go on strike as they voted to do so.
You're not stupid, you're just learning about complex topics that you're unfamiliar with.
There was no reason to editorialize the title in this fashion but I appreciate that!
I'll reitterate, that the strike is not happening next friday, it's that if an unsatisfactory offer is not made by closing-of-business next Friday then the Teamsters will go on strike when the contract expires on August 1st.
For the sake of my own personal interest (expecting my current living situation to fall through and I'm going to have to get ahold of some household essentials for myself fairly quickly) and theirs, I hope they get everything they want and more.
I want them to pack the court. Who cares if every four years 3 new Justices are added? The supreme court should have about 1001 members sitting on its bench. It would be based AF.
It's a bug where the post you were on changes sometimes. Happens to me when I change tabs and come back to a post I thought was on a tab but nooooope it's something else now. Oddly this only happens on hexbear for me and not other lemmys
