- He's a rock and roll clown
- He does cocaine
I'm afraid that's all we know.
The expressions of everyone watching really makes the scene.
Turning a pair of big dials that say "David Lee Roth" and "Paul Stanley" on them and constantly looking back at the audience for approval like a contestant on the price is right
I will forever laugh at Roth going solo and tanking his career. Van Halen meanwhile are still legends
My favorite tangentially related self-own was Craig Goldy quitting Dio in 1987, some time after the Dream Evil tour, because he was convinced that he was such hot shit that he didn't need to be a guitarist in someone else's band. He went on to do... *checks notes* absolutely fuck-all until 1990-91, when he co-wrote one fucking song for David Lee Roth's A Little Ain't Enough album and then one again decided he was such a pillar of guitar godhood that he could strike out on his own solo career. Where did that bring him? Back to Dio, eventually; but not before he ended up with a guitar credit on Edward fucking Furlong's breakout smash hit pop album, 1992's Hold on Tight, a cultural touchstone of such rising stardom that Craig would never again have his last can of tuna swiped by his hair metal himbo bandmates.
I swear, Rough Cutt was the 80's hair metal version of one of those tech startup incubators, complete with all the coked-out hubris. Wendy Dio had to have been feeding them a steady diet of coke and hair spray fumes, because it's kind of uncanny watching Jake E. Lee go through a similar trajectory after his stint.
Edit: don't get me wrong, the touring musician life can be hard as fuck, and I'm all for artistic integrity and whatnot, but damn. This shit is like acting up like some kind of fucking diva because you were brought on as a hired gun for one album with a major-ish act, and continuing to hoist yourself by your own petard.
It really is amazing what hubris can do to a motherfucker. The hair era was rife with it.
It really was. Another fun Craig Goldy fact is that he did one of those "Guitar Method in the Style Of _____" guitar lesson videos with MVP Home Video (the company behind guitar teaching legend Curt Mitchell), and I don't know if somebody threatened a lawsuit or what, but there are different editions of it both with and without "Dio" in the title. The video itself is hilarious because it mostly consists of Craig showing how to dial in a distortion sound on an old Marshall head (by setting everything to 5), and then demonstrating that he can't sweep pick or do string-skipping licks, so instead he fakes his way through with pick rakes and what he calls a left hand "spider hop." Then there's about 8 minutes of motivational speech in which he informs the dear viewer that the reason they aren't a rock star is not, in fact, that they aren't a well-connected nepo baby, but rather that they just don't want it enough.
There is a really cool bit where he goes off on a tangent about playing two-handed taps on the fretboard almost like a piano or harpsichord, but it's impossible to do without a stage hand to hold the guitar up for you and a scarf or something to stop the strings from ringing out. So, marginally useful info at best.
