I enjoyed "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck. It takes place at the dawn of the industrial revolution in Qing Dynasty China.
There's a short story - I'll Seen in Tyre - that's part of the Roma Sub Rosa (ancient Roman murder series), which I really liked, as well.
