    that was a very integral part of it because the transatlantic slave trade ended long before the domestic slave trade, meaning the slave population was only able to grow through reproduction. Marriages between slaves were not legally recognized, and couplings were often forced for breeding of new slaves. Then, when slaves families really did grow to bond and love each other they were threatened with family separation. This is to say nothing of plantation owners and overseers taking advantage of slaves.
