The downside is the community's documentation is scattered trash compared to any other technical part of the internet.

It took me almost 10 years to finally enjoy Ocarina of Time that I have a legit VC copy of. I want to load up a majoras mask wad and all the forum posts just read like lists of codewords i'm not cool enough to know. I set this up almost a year ago, I don't remember what ios versions I installed. I'm gonna have to reboot this thing like 10 times before I figure it out.

Edit: Hacked my 3ds for advance wars, holy shit themes have sound.

did u know that project64 has depth access now which means the actually good reshade effects, not the trash post ones, can be applied to n64 games, and since most of those games have a 60fps cheat and also a gigapixel upres texture pack (ai created from the originals so it's not just a shitty redo from some texture), shit looks fukn amazin now

the banjo kazooie games in particular look amazin with AO and DOF and the upres etc

there's also a branch of dolphin that has depth access

u tell me this shit doesn't look better without being a stupid different thing

      Damn that does look good.

My main reason for messing with the Wii is for some comfy couch gaming. Despite being in the age range, I never had an n64 as a kid and only got one a couple months ago from a friend, only to learn I lack the nostalgia to actually enjoy it. I would like to yoink a physical copy of banjo kazooie though. I made the mistake of telling the retro game store I liked Rare titles and they suggested the ugly mess thats jet force gemini. People like it but I couldn't get past the first level. Maybe i'll trade it in and get a game I'd enjoy.

pretty sure there's a gigapixel pack for that out there

the one for conker's is also great

The only ones that dont look super good are ones for games where the devs (usually nintendo devs) didn't figure out texture blending so it just ends up being a sharp edge on a higher res texture (mario 64 being the prime example). But shit with texture styling with edge blends is always gonna look cash money eg all the Rare platformers

PSP modding was awesome before smartphones were actually useful. I played a ton of old games. Many emulators even had ad-hoc multiplayer. Also hundreds of hours of Monster Hunter.

I've never been able to vibe with touch screen emulation or playing classic games on a keyboard. Its nice turning something on and going to town without configuring game pads and stuff. That being said, i'm not really super dedicated to gaming so its not a big deal to me.

You can use controllers with phones and computers, though.

Sure, but I'd either be sitting at my desk or have to carry around a controller and a place to put my phone, or use a precarious clip.

I use an old laptop connected to a tv to stream media so for older games, I'm sure it could work. I guess it all comes down to if I'm not comfortable playing the game then I wont end up playing it. Some games make sense at desk, some make sense on a couch, some should be mobile. Disco Elysium is no fun on a couch, trust me I've tried.

A modded Wii U is one of the greatest gaming machines of all time. I've found so many relaxing, enjoyable games I never would have tried before. Everybody should give Captain Road Treasure Tracker a try.

Why would I proofread when I know people like you are around to do it for me?

I never planed on getting a Wii U but i'll keep an eye out for a cheap unit. Not sure how worth it it'd be if I already have my wii set up nice.

There are only a handful of Wii U exclusives that make it worth it if you already have a Wii. I did get mine for $60 though, which ain't bad.

I have to use my Wii in maintenance mode or else it freezes on the main menu. It’s usable but it’s a little annoying having to do that and I’ve thought about modding it to try and fix it, but I don’t really know where to start and I don’t want to lose any of my virtual console games (though now that super Mario 3D all stars is out I’m a little less worried)

If you load homebrew, theres some simple steps you can take to back up your internal nand including saves and vc games.

At this point if you lost a vc game, you can just pirate the wad again and use your backed up save.

on reddit there's r/wiihacks and it was really helpful for me when i hacked my wii a couple years ago. i didn't load any n64 games on mine but there's rereleases of the n64 zelda games for gamecube that might be easier to play on a homebrewed wii

Thats the main resource I use but it can be hit or miss when you're trying to debug an issue. For example, I wanted to safely load some VC wads onto the console, so I followed some emunand tutorials for usbloaderGX. I backed up my NAND and now i had like 10 duplicated channels, on top of that majora's mask didn't load anyway. So I took the riskier route and just used yet another wad manager and installed it directly to nand. I don't have a lot of stuff on there so it was no issue really.

It is awfully spooky when you boot up without your external HDD and load up USB Loader, then reboot with the HDD and you get a message your system is corrupted. One of these days I need to just yoink a good will Wii to experiment on and not fuck with the console I've had since I was a kid that my late grandma helped pay for.

ohhhh yeah i think i read that loading virtual console games can be kinda hard so i just avoided that. i got mine to run gamecube roms and called it good lol, i didn't want to risk bricking it or anything. but good luck!

Yo for real... I'm pretty good with tech related stuff but the wii modding scene is a nightmare as far as consistency lol. I eventually just started installing whatever IOS thingies I felt like and pretty much everything worked fine... but I haven't started the thing up in a few years and I would have no idea how to update / fix it

I knew there had to be Chapos into MKW. Do you play competitive at all?

Tbh I mostly play the time trial mode. I was just curious! The mariokartboards.com site is helpful for getting into competitive.

Oh, thanks for the link! I'm not a fan of time trials myself - resetting until I get a 0.1 second improvement just isn't fun for me.

The last time I checked if i could homebrew my 3DS was around when I hacked my Wii. Aparently there's an easy hack available now and guess who's gonna play some advanced wars when he gets home.

A lot of homebrew scenes are trash. Only like the PSP with the massive amount of people doing hacking, is the only good one.
