Children and young adults have minimal risk, and there is no scientific or public health rationale to close day care centers, schools, or colleges. In-person education is critically important for both the intellectual and social development for all kids, but school closures are especially harmful for working-class children whose parents cannot afford tutors, pod schools, or private schools.
This point is not refuted or disputed by the interviewer of the original article
Edit: Updated Article with corrected numbers . Argument still stands
Also it's not like cities can't afford to provide checks/assistance to working families who can't pay for it, they just won't. (also keeping schools open looks good for the economy)
And they especially won't do it if more people think that sending kids to school is the only option.
I honestly think they have contrarian brain. They publish so many weird takes that I seriously think they half believe it and are fucking with us. This is one of the few times I'm on the WTF Jacobin train and I've been willing to cut them some slack in the past. Funny enough, I found out about this from Nathan J Robinson. As much as he makes a fool of himself, he at least has a moral standpoint that reflects in his left anticommunist views. He doesn't want to kill people.
Children and young adults have minimal risk,
Minimal risk of dying. Children aren't immune from COVID and spread it just as easily as anyone else. They also aren't immune from post-COVID complications, even if they weren't symptomatic, like myocarditis.
Closures are harmful for working class kids, but so are their own deaths and family deaths.
LOL did they take it down???
Apparently they sent out this disclaimer
The numbers in the post "A Quick Calculation on How Many Kids Jacobin Is Willing to Let Die," sent out today, were based on a misreading of a CDC chart. I'm going to track down the right numbers, but I wanted to let people know as soon as I could that the numbers that my arguement relied on cannot be relied on. My apologies to our readers for the mistake. Regards, Jim Naureckas Editor, FAIR.org
They posted a new article with corrected numbers, but the point still stands https://fair.org/home/a-quick-corrected-calculation-on-child-covid-deaths/
