Is it? I mean it's niche but it's not technically incompetent or anything. I used to listen to her music all the time before knowing anything about her personality. She's pretty good at drawing cool synth noises out of a Roland Jupiter.
Most people are pushed away by her voice. She does this breathy almost falsetto lispy thing that's kind of annoying.
I mean, there are one or two songs that are good, but her big thing was kinda pre-staging the actually great artists that would come out afterwards. But even then, stuff like Crystal Castles (specifically Alice Gao), A.G. Cook (P.C. Music production in general), and a whole other host of artists were far more directly responsible for the pre-staging the huge take off of what would be called 'hyper-pop'.
Grimes is fine, maybe even above average, but definitely overblown.
I guess? It's kinda already dead now, but at least it experienced a life outside the internet unlike vapor-wave.
I think she uses a Jupiter-8 in her first few albums. Those are full synthesizers with ADSR controls and an LFO bank, but she might have been using presets, who knows.
I guess it's still a matter of taste though because I've always thought her music is above average.
I'd like to say that because I don't like her or her music, and especially because she's a rich kid to begin with, but this is probably just that the music industry fucks everyone over, and getting the bag early on a pool yramid scheme is pretty lucrative.

Well yeah thanks for that...I went down a weird rabbit hole for too long. She made a space nazi joke on Holocaust Rememberance Day and liked some serious bullshit on Twitter. Surprised me as I remember she did Communist Manifesto photoshoot around the time she was dating Chelsea Manning. Her 2020 album had an environmentalist name, right before a global pandemic which seemed a bit prescient.
I've always known that We Appreciate Power is a song about femme fascism furturism but well incoherent is the right word for her politically. She's always been a troll.
