Assuming the election was already lost after the death of their original nominee, the Democrats decided to pick a likable but unwinnable minority candidate to improve their chances in the following presidential election.

I have a soft spot in my heart for this movie. Chris Rock is mediocre, but Bernie Mack and the supporting cast is pretty strong. It has its moments like Chris Rock DJing Nelly at a stuffy donor event, and it really nailed the kind of dog whistle racism that hit Obama 5 years later. And It comes from a cinematic era before majority-black comedies became dominated by Tyler Perry and Ice-Cube vehicles.
