Welcome to the Melbourne Community Daily Discussion Thread.
Alrighty, I made it to Mildura a couple of hours ago. I didn't really come to do anything, mainly just for the trip. I did, however, walk over to NSW and took a photo of the welcome to NSW sign (I'll share my pics when I get home - Jerboa doesn't like images over like 5mb)
I was wearing my jacket though, so I did sweat a lot, and I'm getting on another bus back to melbs soon and I'm a little nervous. I did bring deodorant, but not a spare shirt... Ah well, I'll be right I think, I've got a bit over an hour to dry out. Also I've issued 23 "morning!"s this morning, and I've received 15 back with 8 just ignoring me. Not too bad, better than I'd get in Melbourne I think?
I really don't know why I love Mildura so much. This is my seventh time coming here, and coming from Melbourne that seems like a fair bit. Also, to travel almost 1,000km I only paid $8.60 + food and drink, so that's not too bad I say! I love this fair cap
My nan lives there! If you're keen on chatting to hard of hearing 97 year old Aussie ladies who won't understand who you are or why you're there, go say hi!
I really love that you take yourself on adventures like that 🤗 and when you put it that way it is incredibly cheap!
Here you are on an interstate adventure and I'm yet to haul ass out of bed! How long does the trip take? Is the weather nice?
You can get to Mildura in about 6 or so hours by car, and I think it's similar if you take the fast way (train to Swan Hill then coach) but I like catching the night coach from Melbourne which goes all the way there, it's a night one and takes about 9 hours getting there at about quarter past 6. It's a great trip, and I do recommend!
I'm definitely interested.. the price is definitely an incentive!
Here's to the Matildas win and the man's birthday
Cake

Image of a Double chocolate mousse cake.
Criticism 1: Note the air bubbles in the base. That is because I poured the whole mousse into the base instead of a little bit first, then smooth it out, then the rest.
Criticism 2: It was quite crumbly. That's because I made it yesterday so it's been in the fridge a whole 30 hours instead of the recommended 3 hours.
Conclusion: Apart from those two things it was relatively easy to make and quite delicious. Whipped cream was served with it. Would make it again. 4/5 yum yums.
I love the nighttime Mildura coach... Ever so slightly creepy photo I took on our rest stop in Donald

Alt image thingy: a kinda slightly creepy photo taken at 2am of desserted roads in Donald
Thanks! It was a good vibe! The pub opens up for a couple of hours so everyone can grab a bite to eat and a drink, very laid back. Quite different in the day!
I fucking love this community. I'd rather drink my own piss than drink instant. Very good sir/madam. We are all very excepting here. Take my upvote.🔝
We are all very excepting here.
Pacifically people who drink expresso ;)
Someone should print that on a tshirt and put it in a souvenir shop. I'm also surprised license plates haven't changed to "victoria - the coffee capital" I'm fine with instant when real coffee isn't available.
You can have that. Here's another one We are all mushrooms - kept in the dark and fed shit That one's not mine. It's an oldie but a goody.
You want a coffee capital, visit Chiang Mai in Thailand. Absolute coffee decadence at affordable prices.
Planned to go earlier in the year but ended up with Phuket. Next time!
I added up the Ks from my trip... In 26 hours I covered 1,157km
319km yesterday (23km by train and 296km by bus). 838km today (188km by train, 643km by bus and 7km of walking)
I also slept for 56 minutes over this time so fun days 😆
Friend planned their birthday drinks at 6pm at a brewery unknowingly, booked a table. Get there, apologetic brewery owner: sorry all the soccer fans have colonised your table. Place was packed to the rafters. Owner: we'll give you some free food and drinks I'm sorry. Us: hell yeh easy, thanks. Enjoyed last hour of game with buzzing crowd, got free food and drinks and eventually our spot. Solid W.
I'm gonna shock you Melburnians here but I like instant coffee.
It's come a long way from the catering cans of International Rust that I've unfortunately partaken in, that's for sure. It all depends on whether I'm drinking for pleasure or need. It is after all a drug, and if instant is my only option then I'll gladly partake rather than go without.
Yeah home made real coffee isn't worth the effort. I lived on that cheap home brand stuff for a couple of years. Annoying it doesn't seem to be around anymore, but the big jar of moccona on special are fine.
While we're at can we laugh at the word barista and coffee artists in general? Sure, its a skill like any other, but lmao. My first part time job was in a cafe. I wasn't a barista, just a short order cook basically. The pretentious single origin cold pressed $8 stuff for those with a pallette makes is a lot like the "vinyl revival", it's all fucking overpriced hipster marketing with no substance.
There's nothing wrong with taking pride in your work etc and being good at things but calling casual bartenders rock stars? hahahah. yeah, nah.
I'm inclined to disagree. There is definitely a difference between an espresso from a proper machine versus instant.
If push comes to shove I can tolerate instant but unwillingly.
Yeah there's a big difference, I love good coffee, but after years of using a stovetop percolator I changed to instant after a neighbour used to make it for me and I realised it wasn't as bad as I thought. It's not the same and I still enjoy making real coffee when friends visit, but instant is just more convenient and cheaper. Horses for courses, I think people gatekeeping anything is annoying though.
I love instant coffee!!
Though the Cafe Aurora stuff I bought smells like chemicals; usually I get the homebrand stuff but they were out of stock lol
I get the big arse jar of Vittoria or Moccona when it's half price.
I tried it and I don't understand how it can be called coffee when it tastes like hot bad weetbix juice.
Snootingly sipping my machine made coffee while reading this post.
Instant has its place. When I want a second coffee at work but don’t want to spend the money. The office has those instant coffee bags and they’re not bad.
Yeah I really like instant coffee and I also like Starbucks, I don't care.
I love starbucks. The coffee is really good and they have good customer service and amenities. In the US they are so reliable and welcoming so I always look for one when I travel.
And you can stay in there (until they close down for the night), but they're open late which I appreciate.
Never been able to tolerate drip coffee since the offerings at the Grill Room (now the West End Cafe) at Monash. Eurrrgh.
It's good if you make your own, have nice fresh ground beans and do not let it sit for hours. Make fresh a few times a day and it's good. I generally buy a 4 cup size max.
get a Bru or an aeropress. I can't stand the smell of coffee, so no machine for His Lordship but between the bru and the instapress he's snootin' it up.
I feel like we need a tutorial (maybe pinned?) on [!meta@aussie.zone] ? for basic posting instructions for images, gifs, links etc..
I see heaps of images posted sideways and it took like two months for me to figure out how to post a gif (thank you Pilk).
A back to basics type of Meta post.
I think some of it can be solved by updates to the Lemmy software itself. I've seen the issue with image rotation and my assumption is that Lemmy is ignoring the orientation EXIF data. Also allowing the upload of GIFs, or fixing it so the image picker doesn't show them.
Then there are the laborious to users and communities when using desktop site which definitely needs a bit of streamlining. Sync for Lemmy lets you use the @ symbol to mention others, for example.
Just picked up that carolina reaper hawt sauce from woolies someone on here recommended.
Much excite.
These fajitas for dins are going to be a seething, raging orgy of scoville units.
Just put a dollop on a teaspoon to test. That is very tasty sauce with good kick!
The pictures from the fire in Hawaii are terrifying. 😭😭😭
And it seems every week there is a big fire somewhere in the world that doesn't normally have fires. ( it's global warming )
Work has seemed particularly ridiculous and pointless in light of these daily reports. Deck chairs on the titanic indeed.
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who replied last night to my anxiety freak out. I had a shower, a cup of lemsip and that helped me calm down and I got a decent sleep. Woke up this morning feeling less catastrophic and thinking that maybe sometimes shitty things happen for good reasons. I really want to return to study so had the idea to maybe do a bartending short course at the vic bar school and get a hospo job and get out of retail management so I can finally return to study and do a counselling course. Anyone done a course at the vic bar school per chance and has advice?
Have not done any courses there, but very glad you are feeling a bit better.
You could be better off just doing an rsa and dropping your availability in at a bunch of bars close to where you live. Any kind of management experience will be highly regarded. Source: worked in clubs and bars for a long time. Every bar is similar but has their own way of doing things. I can't comment on the vic bar school, but I hardly met anyone who had a lot of experience or actually did a course starting out.
Thank you for your advice! I was thinking I'd do the bartending short course and just learn the basics of drink making. I have no idea how to make cocktails and can't pour a beer on tap. I also assumed that bar or pubs would want someone with at least some training as they may not have time to train someone from scratch
Yeah look it can't hurt. I left the industry earlier this year. I worked mostly in nightclubs, and they regularly started people with no experience. None of it is super difficult but like anything there's a learning curve and people can become highly accomplished at making wonderful cocktails. Be aware of the fact that the industry is rife with sexual harassment, poor workplace safety, bad payers and awful employers. Hospo voice cleaned the industry up somewhat, but they're not around anymore and there's still a lot of really shit behaviour you're supposed to tolerate from behind the bar. Much of it comes from the other staff and the customers. Most of the guys I worked with over the years turned out to be complete fucking creeps, not all, but it's a toxic masc culture and security are usually much worse and get away with it, cos macho bullshit and not being directly employed by the bar in a lot of cases.
Yeah I think I was romanticising a bit. I'm just super anxious about a situation at work that I'm worried is going to blow up in a week or so and I'm anticipating needing a new job in the next couple of weeks. I'm a casual working full time hours but in this economic climate I haven't been able to accrue much savings. So I'm just very stressed out and looking for any solution and thought getting my RSA and going hospo and start studying would be it.
I'm definitely not saying it's a bad idea, just to be aware to follow your intuition when staying in a workplace. If something smells like shit, it probably is. There are a lot of places which are good also.
That is the first ever soccer game I've watched all the way through. I need a cigarette.
Left over roast and veggies reheated in the oven makes a fantastic early dinner. I'm stuffed 🥔
We were absolutely screaming!
The downside of France losing is that their anthem is a straight up banger, and we're now deprived of it.
