The 1949–50 edition of the IOC's "Green Booklet" stated that each colour corresponded to a particular continent: "blue for Europe, yellow for Asia, black for Africa, green for Australia, and red for America".
I think that was only afterwards and maybe not the original intention. I remember reading somewhere the rings are supposed to have six colors that show up on every participating country's flag. Like white and blue for Greece, yellow and blue for Sweden, etc.
But I wouldn't put it past the IOC to make up something racist later
