The sugar industry absolutely did do that bribing; sugar is the most common cause of obesity and related diseases; demonizing fats was the main way nutrition fads of the 80s and 90s went down the wrong track; a lot of the adverse health effects of cholesterol are specific to factory-farmed meat; every medication and treatment comes at a cost and it's not a good idea to take them when you don't need them; yet pharmaceutical companies are perfectly glad to expand into new markets; a few hours of sun a day outside of peak intensity is good for you.
Also if more people were and rode bikes, I doubt there would be nearly as much practical use for statins.
