Needs a CW for racism. I'm gonna leave this up for another hour, if the cw hasn't been added by then I'll take it down. I'm not sure if this has been changed in a recent lemmy version, but you should still be able to edit it, once the cw is added I'll put it back up.

Liberals will see this and still argue that portraying Xi as Winnie the Pooh isn't racist.

Are you kidding right now or seriously asking how portraying an Asian person as yellow is racist?

I never made that connection, thought it was a shape thing (oh and the red shirt). But I never saw asian people as yellow, and don't understand that remark. An asian friend of mine once jokingly referred to herself as a banana, but then had to explain the joke to me.

Whether you personally are caught up or not it still has a deep history in anti-asian racism. Depictions of asians as yellow is a classic hallmark of anti-asian racism.

Racism is racism. If you think that certain nation is of a certain kind because of their genetics, it's just racism, whether it applies to yourself or not.

But to clarify, she was only making a joke, it wasn't racist.

Why is Uganda there? All I know about the country is that it's one of the most zealously homophobic countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Is that why?

That's the tragedy of it, along with the fears of the ongoing HIV pandemic. Both go back to various Western imperial designs. Sub-Saharan Africa before all that had a rich history of varied gender and sexual expression before all that was brutally destroyed.

The HIV part especially saddens me because of how the initial transmission, according to new scholarship, probably happened because of French and Belgian colonial forces consuming bushmeat during the campaign against the German forces in Cameroon during WWI.

I mean, one of the things liberal interventionists use on all fronts is queer people as political props, regardless of how tolerant the leadership actually is. We see the same with the supposedly tolerant Israelis, who also have large swaths of their electorate who are homophobic. I suppose it's still a lazy guess on my part.

If I had to put money on it, maybe the Ukrainians are angry about Russian mercenaries being active in the region, like in Sudan?

Neoliberal fascists (same-picture ) do oppose homophobia, but only for chauvinist reasons. They won’t give a shit about LGBT people in their own countries as long as they’re more liberal than their enemies, because that’s the end goal - liberal “free market democracy”, not freedom.

Right? They had to show restraint because they're supporting Israel at the moment, but I'm 100% this person would drop the vilest happy merchant Nazi cartoon if the circumstances were different.

Gee, I can't imagine why so many countries around the world don't want to support Ukraine or Western countries in general (not that Ukraine is guaranteed to continue being considered a Western country once EU countries decide to pay attention to their own countries' affairs rather than seeing how much they can mess with Russia).

I'm reminded of a Ukrainian on twitter using the okay/not okay picture from Family guy to refer to countries standing with Ukraine vs those that aren't, clearly not realizing that that scene in Family guy was intended to mock racists.

not that Ukraine is guaranteed to continue being considered a Western country

It wasn't until 2014 for a brief period, then people forgot about them until the invasion at which point they declared them honourary whites again

Ukraine and the rest of the western world were begging Africans to stop supporting China snd Russia or else they’ll face sanctions. They also begged China to step in and get Russia to end the war, and now it portrays Russia as the “master” of China lol
